Aussie surfer Bede Durbidge rushed to hospital after brutal Pipeline wipeout

Australian surfer Bede Durbidge has been rushed to hospital after a brutal wipeout at the Pipeline Masters in Hawaii.

The 32-year-old caught a rail and fell when he attempted to take off on the first wave of his heat against Keanu Asing, in the competition's third round.

Durbidge slammed into the dangerous reef bottom before the wave crashed over him.

It is believed his hip bore the brunt of the impact.

He was rescued by a medical jet-ski and has been taken to hospital for further examination.

"We’re competitors temporarily, but friends forever," Asing said in a post-heat interview.

The 22-year-old American surfer said it was a dangerous wave.

"This wave is very serious. I don’t wish the worst upon anybody. I just hope everybody is okay," he said.

Pipeline is regarded as one of the heaviest breaks in the world.
