Aussie decathlete’s Commonwealth Games dream shattered before race even begins

Australian decathlete Jake Stein’s hope for a medal at the Commonwealth Games didn’t last long, with two excruciating false starts in the first of the 10 events.

The 100m sprinters are given a second chance after one false start – but Stein managed to do it twice.

He told NewsCorp that he forgot how to start the race, intimidated by the crowds around him.

“It’s schoolboy errors really, you learnt to start when you are seven or eight and I forgot how to do it today,” he said.

“I tried to stay on heels (for the second one), it’s the biggest crowd I’ve ever competed in front of and I kind of felt that I had heard a few things.

“I knew it was me straight away, I could see I was well ahead of everyone and my start is not that good.”

Stein will have another chance to redeem himself with eight events to come.

“A medal was definitely in the plan but now it is just keep ticking away get a few PBs and a few individual wins,” he said.

“Three throws, three victories, that would be nice.”
