Wild elephant kills two women in Nepal

A wild elephant has killed two women outside their home near a wildlife reserve in Nepal.

They were working in their field on Tuesday afternoon when the animal fatally trampled the pair, aged 45 and 35, near the village of Kanchanpur, police say.

The elephant was from Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve, a habitat for wild animals from water buffalo to rare species of birds.

On Monday, a leopard killed a six-year-old boy who was returning home on the outskirts of Kathmandu.

Police found the boy's dead body inside a forest after his family alerted police to the disappearance.

Under Nepalese law, the victim's family is entitled to one million rupees $A13,640 in compensation for death by wild animal.
