Four children have been killed in western Nepal after an old improvised explosive device, believed to be a remnant of the country's civil war, went off.

Laxman Dhakal, chief district officer in Rolpa district, told DPA on Thursday that the children were aged between 5 and 15 years old.

They had been returning home from a nearby forested area when the blast went off.

Rolpa was the main base of Maoist guerrillas who waged a decade-long war against the state.

The war, which cost as many as 17,000 lives, ended with a peace agreement between the government and the rebels in 2006.
