'No details' of $2.7b oil case: Aust firm

A Perth-based oil and gas company says it has yet to learn the details of the $2.7 billion lawsuit launched by the Indonesian government over Australia's worst offshore oil spill and denies it hasn't acted in good faith.

Indonesia's maritime ministry announced last week that it had launched a civil action against the Perth-based PTTEP Australasia, as well as PPTEP Thailand branch and the state-owned company, Petroleum Authority of Thailand (PTT PCL).

The move comes after more than 300,000 litres of oil and gas is alleged to have spewed daily into the Timor Sea following an explosion at a Montara oil rig on August 21, 2009.

It was eventually plugged on November 3, but by that time the government says more than 1200 hectares of mangrove, 1400 hectares of seagrass and 700 hectares of coral was damaged.

In announcing the claim, the government also lashed out as what they described as a lack of "good faith" from the companies.

He said they had sought to sign a memorandum of understanding with the company in Singapore in 2012, following discussions but PTTEP failed to send anyone to the meeting.

PPTEP Australiasia said in a statement on Monday that it was "aware of reports" of the legal proceedings but that it had "not been served with proceedings" and had no information as to the extent of the claim.

"PTTEP has always acted co-operatively and in good faith in our past discussions with the Government of Indonesia, and will continue to do so."

They repeated denials that no oil from Montara had reached Indonesia's shores and that no long-term environmental damage was done to the Timor Sea.

Last year, Maurice Blackburn Lawyers launched a class action on behalf of more than 13,000 Indonesian seaweed farmers in the Federal Court in Sydney claiming more than $200 million in damages.
