Indon prosecutor wants Aussie jailed

A West Australian man accused of causing a fatal motorbike crash in Indonesia should be jailed for at least 18 months, the prosecutor has told his trial.

Jake Drage, 23, has been in custody since the June 30 crash, which claimed the life of a West Java woman who was riding pillion on her teenage daughter's motorcycle.

He is facing a maximum six years in jail and/or a maximum fine of $1100.

Prosecutor Eka Aryanta on Tuesday argued for Drage to serve 18 months' jail and pay a Rp5 million ($468) fine.

He said Drage was carrying a surfboard on his motorbike at the time of the crash, which made his riding "not optimal".

He also didn't have an Indonesian driver's licence, his Australian licence had expired, and his tourist visa and passport had expired, he said.

However, the prosecutor noted Drage's good intentions towards the victim's family.

"The defendant has admitted wrongdoing when he was driving that caused the accident and the loss of another's life," he said.

Through a translator, Drage responded that his visa had expired two weeks after the crash while he was in custody.

The trial will hear from his defence this week.

Leaving the courtroom, Drage told reporters he would answer their questions at a later stage.

"I want to be free soon," he said.

Drage, a former personal trainer who was in Indonesia on a surfing holiday, has converted to Islam while in custody.

Previously, the trial has heard Drage was overtaking another vehicle before the crash at such a speed it made the collision "unavoidable".

But the victim's husband, a man named Iim, has said he did not want to press charges, and that he appreciated Drage's sympathy and donations of about $3000.
