Lebanese TV host shuts down interview with sexist sheik

A Lebanese television host has cut short an interview with a London-based sheik after he told her it was beneath him to be interviewed by a woman.

Rima Karaki was interviewing Islamist scholar Hani Al-Seba'i for Lebanon's Al Jadeed TV on reports of Christians joining ISIL.

After Mr Al-Seba'i spent around a minute discussing historical parallels to today’s situation Ms Karaki asked him to return to the question at hand.

"Listen, don't cut me off. I will answer as I please," he says.

"I will not answer the way you like, because I'm here to serve the idea in which I believe."

In the footage translated by Middle East Media Research Institute, he goes on to label the host "high and mighty" before Ms Karaki informs him, "In this studio, I run the show."

"For your own benefit, I'm telling you that we are running out of time," she says.

The host asks that instead of arguing they return to the topic of discussion, to which Mr Al-Seba'i replies, "Are you done? Shut up, so I can talk."

He then begins to claim that it is beneath him to answer to Ms Karaki, only to find his microphone muted.

A calm Ms Karaki holds her hand up, closing the exchange by saying, "Either there is mutual respect, or the conversation is over."
