A British hostage says prisoners who try to escape ISIL have been water-boarded, according to the latest video released by the terrorist organisation.

John Cantlie has been held captive for more than two years and appears in the fifth propaganda video released by ISIL.

The freelance photojournalist, who previously worked for UK newspapers The Sunday Telegraph and The Sunday Times, appeared in a post on ISIL's English-language propaganda website.

According to Press Association, the 43-year-old uses the six and a half minute film to criticise both the British and US governments, in what appears to be scripted dialogue.

"Some of us who tried to escape were water-boarded by our captors, as Muslim prisoners are water-boarded by their American captors," he said.

"Unless we tried something stupid like escaping or doing something we shouldn't, we were treated well by the Islamic State."

Mr Cantlie also reads emails allegedly exchanged between ISIL and the families of captured Americans.

His sister Jessica Cantlie has appealed in the past for direct contact with her brother's captors.

Their 80-year-old father Paul died from pneumonia-related complications several days ago.

It is unknown when the video was filmed, with Mr Cantlie making no reference to recent events.

He ends the video by saying the next video would discuss a failed rescue mission.
