Airline apologises after woman with disability forced to drag herself down aisle to use the toilet

A Spanish airline has apologised after an English woman had to crawl up the aisle of one of their planes in order to use the toilet.

Jennie Berry, who uses a wheelchair, had to sit towards the back of the Albastar plane, when usually people with disabilities sit closer to the front.

When she needed to use the toilet, she was told by the cabin crew that there wasn't an aisle chair on the flight.

"As you all know - when you've gotta go, you've gotta go - so thankfully as I have good upper body strength I proceeded to drag myself down the aisle towards the toilet, whilst staff continued to serve drinks," Berry wrote on Instagram.

"Once I reached the toilet, staff told me that 'disabled people should wear nappies on board'."

Berry, who is paralysed from the waist down, said every flight she has been on beforehand had an aisle seat and compassionate staff.

"Life as a disabled person can sometimes be downright degrading and embarrassing and unfortunately, this was one of the times," she said. 

"To be outright told to my face that I should wear a nappy when I don't need to and that they are happy with that policy, made me feel humiliated."

Albastar has since posted an apology on Instagram.

"Our main concern is the safety and comfort of all our passengers on each and every flight we operate," the statement read.

"We are working to investigate the incident to ensure that this isolated incident does not happen again on any of our aircraft."

Albastar is a Spanish airline which tends to fly between smaller airports in Europe.
