A Canadian family who rented their home on Airbnb for a weekend has returned to a host's nightmare, after a party bus of revellers showed up for a "drug-induced orgy".

"Our hardwood floors are all popping because there are pools of liquor. There's glass shards, there's a dent in our walls, toilets flooded and plugged with condoms," homeowner Star King told CBC News.

She and husband Mark thought they were renting their Calgary home to a man in his 40s who was in town with three friends for a family wedding.

But hours after they handed over the keys on Saturday evening, a party bus with dozens of people pulled up and began a "drug-induced orgy," as police described it.

The King family returned after getting a series of texts from neighbours and had to plead with the renters to pack up and leave.

The renters left behind piles of trash, food, cigarettes, destroyed art works and unidentifiable stains.

"For me, my first feeling was shock," Mark King told the Calgary Herald.

"I couldn't process it. This is our home, this is our sanctuary."

An Airbnb spokesman said the company has reimbursed the Kings through insurance and has also banned the guest from renting again through its popular accommodation website.

Police are also investigating.
