6.9 quake hits islands off Tokyo

A magnitude-6.9 earthquake has struck a chain of islands off Tokyo, but there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

The epicentre of the quake, which struck at 2219 (AEST), was located near the Ogasawara islands, which are about 1,000km south of Tokyo.

The Japan Meteorological Agency measured the quake at a depth of 480km.
