The Travel Guides head to Louisiana as their USA road trip continues

It's week two of our Travel Guide's supersized USA road trip and there's plenty more fun to come.

The Guides kicked off the trip in Texas, where they visited one of America's spookiest haunted houses and enjoyed a true Texan Rodeo.

As the road trip continued they headed to the Deep South, Louisiana.

And our favourite travellers, The Fren Family, Stack and Mel, "holiday snobs" Kevin and Janetta, best mates Kev, Dorian and Teng (AKA The Target Boys), and Matt and Brett, were ready to hit the road again.

From it's sublime swamp lands, classy cruises and musical culture, Louisiana is very different to Texas for a lot of reasons.

From alligator spotting in America's biggest swamp to learning some confronting history during a plantation visit, there were plenty of things for our Guides to see and do. Here's a look at the best moments from their time in Louisiana:

McGee's Louisiana Swamp Tour 

Our Guides started off in Native Cajun. Settled by French Canadians, it's home to America's biggest swamp and a big chunk of Louisiana's two million alligators. 

Louisiana's Atchafalaya Swamp is twice the size of the ACT and has it's own version of water taxi's — which our Guides hopped on board for a tour.

Coming in with low expectations, the Frens were blown away with the swamp.

"When you think of swamps, I never thought it would look like this. This is really beautiful," Mark said.

"We were so surprised. It didn't smell, the scenery was great," Victoria added.

But one thing was missing — the alligators. 

Kev tried to bait them out of the swamp, dangling his leg over the edge of the boat. 

"C'mon, get your delicious Chinese cuisine... Dinner's ready," he joked. 

When it seemed like all hope was lost, they finally spotted an alligator. But sadly, Kev, Dorian and Teng were disappointed by the "tiny" size of it. 

Stack and Mel were unlucky in their alligator search, so they found another way to get an adrenaline hit. 

"Let's just go really fast on the water," Stack said as they whizzed around the swamp.

Second Line Parades

Heading to New Orleans, our Guides were treated to its unique local tradition — Second Line Parades. 

Held every Sunday, hundreds of people gather for a massive street party. They have bands that play music in the parade, with all of the locals jumping in behind them to follow along.

"I have never seen anything like this at home," Teng said. 

"Back home, something like that would get shut down within half an hour," Kev pointed out.

It was a bit too much for Stack and Mel who "felt a bit out of place". 

But Matt and Brett were in their element and loved dancing their way down the street. 

And even travel "snob" Janetta was enjoying herself during the parade.

"It was the most exciting, authentic thing I've ever done on a holiday," she said.

Plantation Parade 

San Francisco Plantations is an architectural wonder from the 1850s that hides a very dark past. 

Our Guides learnt about the lives and labour of Plantation's enslaved which was really "confronting" for them. 

The Fren family were shocked to see inside the slave cabins and learn that slaves were treated as "property".

"We're only talking 150-200 years ago and that's quite distressing to think that you put a price on someone's life," Mark said. 

"They were taken away from their families and made to work…it would've been pretty horrible and a really dark part in Louisiana's history." 

Oak Alley is another plantation with a bitter past. 

Walking down it's well kept grounds, Matt and Brett complimented the "beautiful mansion".

"It's impressive, but all of this was done on slave labour," Matt added.

And it was a hard pill for Brett to swallow.

"It's a hard concept to understand that the wealth was built on the misery of the people that lived out the back," he said.
