The South Side Six implodes

They were a dubious posse to begin with. Thrown together by circumstance – namely, coming up against the harmonious and tight ‘Keep it North’ crew – the ‘South Side Six’ were never going to win any gang wars. Tonight, that was made even more apparent by the fact that when faced with adversity, the Six’s alliance crumbled like a McCafe cookie.

In just one episode, the group’s dubious harmony smashed into a billion smithereens. Here are the six steps to the Six’s stumble.

1. The failed counter offer
Jason and Sarah had already asked Ronnie and Georgia for big bucks to allow them access to their property so the WA pair could install their pool. Ronnie and Georgia weren’t just reluctant to pay, they simply didn’t have the cash, so offer a new deal. “5000 cash and then 5000 if we win tomorrow night or landscaping week,” Ronnie asks. Sarah doesn’t buy it, labelling the whole situation a real inconvenience. She and Jason say they will consider it but things don’t look good.

2. Frenemy neighbours rise to the surface
While they are thinking, Ronnie and Georgia approach Hannah and Clint, whose permission for access is equally as important. “What have you negotiated with them?” Clint asks, so Ronnie lays out the current terms offered. He doesn’t, however, mention these terms are yet to be accepted – a factor that will come into play later. Clint doesn’t seem fazed whether or not the dotted line has been signed. “Whatever you negotiate with them, I’d like the same,” he says.  

6. Clint’s “balls drop”
As Georgia says through tears, “What happened to being the nice guys on The Block?” Clint reveals he is more ruthless than they may have thought. “It is neighbourly? It happens in everyday lives. If there’s money on offer, then money talks,” he says bluntly. “It’s a competition, they know that.”

And just when you think it’s all been done, Houses One and Two have one final kicker. At judging, Clint pipes up, “Scotty, in further to that, we’d just like to see a receipt of transaction from Ronnie and Georgia’s accounts to both [of ours] before a crane is on site tomorrow,” he requests. Ronnie and Georgia are incredulous. “Clint’s balls have finally dropped. … For once, he’s actually said something,” says Ronnie.

“You don’t trust them to pay you?” host Scott Cam challenges. “Well, they did come to our house and blatantly lie to our faces,” says Hannah (watch the tense moment in the video above). Ronnie and Georgia are shocked and query the charge but Hannah stands firm. “That’s how you want to interpret it, that’s fine," says Georgia.

“I can’t believe this is what it’s come to,” Georgia says later. “People who you thought were your friends are just in it for themselves and they’re actually greedy,” she adds, tears running down her face.

“If anything, this has now just given me motivation to work even harder and just win every room and shove it in their face.”
