Ikea’s Grownroom means everyone can grow their own food
Ikea and their innovation and design lab, known as Space 10, work on developing products and ideas for sustainable future living in urban environments. The Growroom is one such idea to come out of the Copenhagen headquarters.
The Growroom was designed by architects Sine Lindholm and Mads-Ulrik Husum and was created to offer urbanites their very own affordable herb and vegetable garden. The idea is that the spherical garden will allow people to grow their own food and bring back nature to the cities. The sphere measures approximately 9.2 by 8.2 feet and features five tiers on which to place planters filled with all kinds of plants, herbs, and small vegetables.
After showing the Growroom at Chart Art Fair, they were so overwhelmed with the response, that they’ve released the design plans so people who want to build one can.
TO construct your very own Growroom, you need 17 sheets of plywood, a rubber hammer, and access to a space with a CNC milling machine or laser cutter. You can check out the plan here.
