This gorgeous apartment used to be a commercial garage

Sam Crawford Architects, based in Newtown have transformed a former commercial garage in Darlinghurst into this light-filled modern home.
The property is sandwiched between two terrace houses and is therefore very long and narrow, calling for intelligent design and planning.

They also faced heritage constraints as the street-front room had to retain its existing ceiling height, and the façade of the home also had to be protected.
The result was a tall, light-filled apartment with an internal courtyard. They used black steel, recycled brick, concrete and timber.
The home was a finalist in the Australia House & Garden Top 50 Room Awards 2016 for the Best Kitchen category.
