Exclusive: Dion opens up about trying with Carolina and their heated Dinner Party conversation on MAFS

Things are not going well for Carolina and Dion, but he's not giving up on their relationship just yet. 

The groom has been pulling out all the stops, from cooking her meals to his heartfelt letter and even recreating a bouquet of flowers from their wedding day. He's really trying. 

But even his biggest gestures aren't being received well, which all came to a head at the Dinner Party when he pulled her aside for a one-on-one chat.

"Firstly, it's never nice to go through these issues with somebody... It's [Dion's efforts] never really being reciprocated," the groom told 9Entertainment.

Dion explained that his lack of a traumatic past had become an issue for Carolina, which he wanted to try to address.

"I'm constantly, constantly trying, like going to get the flowers, writing that letter, because you know Carolina says, 'I [Dion] haven't suffered trauma, I haven't been through enough struggles in my life'.

"You know what? A lot of people haven't had trauma, a lot of people haven't had struggles, and my life has been different from their life."

Dion explained he wrote the letter to show her that he could be deep and open up and that he can be there for her in a relationship.

"Putting my heart on paper is the way of me providing that to her. Yet, her reaction wasn't as warm as I wanted it to be, let's put it that way." 

Things reached boiling point between the pair and Dion decided to move out and into his own apartment. 

"Maybe it's just we need to take some time apart here, to just reassess and reevaluate everything," he said of the situation.

"After the Photo Ranking challenge, Carolina was pretty brutally honest and put me third last. Then basically called me a liar for putting her first and said that she doesn't believe me, and that I'm just doing it for the cameras.

"There's no reason for me to lie, she just didn't believe me."

With things already so tense between them, Dion decided to give things another chance and pulled her away from the rest of the group at the Dinner Party. 

"I think it's important because obviously in these group discussions, a lot of people can be quite full-on towards one person when everyone's disagreeing with the way she's handling it," Dion explained. 

"So I think it's important to just pull Carolina aside and be respectful and kind, and have that open conversation with her about the issues and how we can look to move forward. 

"It's important for her to hear it from my mouth directly and try to smooth things over and be as respectful as possible." 

Throughout their conversation Dion made it clear he wanted to keep working on things, despite how difficult the week had been for them. 

"I came to this experiment to be open to new things," he said. 

"I suppose if it was the outside world, I probably would have run and walked away, but that's not what has worked for me in the past. 

"So by changing my mentality and looking at things differently, and using the tools and the advice that the experts provide...I'm here to work for something. When I work for something I put my all into it, and I'm not going to give up until I know it's completely done."
