What are the consent lights?

This year, the Islanders have a special button they can press press to let producers know they are consenting to whatever is happening under the covers in the shared bedroom.

Previously, Islanders were instructed to whisper the words "I consent" into their microphones, but this handy button next to each bed alleviates any doubt that an intimate touch is completely welcomed by the consenting adults involved.

Love Island Australia's executive producer Alex Mavroidakis told 9Entertainment: "Nothing is more important to the producers of Love island Australia than the welfare of the Islanders in the Villa.

"In a show where people are exploring new relationships and sharing beds, absolute and unquestionable mutual consent is essential.

"There is only one place in the Villa where the cameras cannot see the Islanders – under the doona! The consent light was designed to alleviate any doubt whatsoever that any intimate touching etc. is completely welcomed by both consenting adults.

"The neon hearts you can see on every bedhead are lit up during the day but go dark when the bedroom lights are switched off. If the couple in the bed would like to consent then they simply push a button on their side of the bedhead.

"This switches on an infrared light that cannot be seen in the bedroom but can be seen in the control room. That is their message to us that they consent and we can then leave them be. We cannot, and would not, ever show sex on the show so we have no interest in focusing our cameras on a couple once the light is on and they progress past anything other than kissing."

When asked how this has changed from previous seasons, Alex added: "The consent light has been a game changer. Previously, Islanders were instructed to whisper the words 'I consent' into their microphones – something they would often forget to do in the heat of passion!

"The consent light became just something you did before going to bed – brush your teeth, put on your PJs, switch on the consent light! For the Islanders, it gives them an extra layer of comfort knowing that their welfare was being looked after 24 hours a day and even when they were out of view."

The winners of Love Island Australia are determined by a public vote.

Grant Crapp and Tayla Damir won the first season, but sadly they broke up two weeks after the finale aired. They split after Tayla learned the rumours of Grant's 'secret girlfriend on the outside' were true.

Tayla is now engaged to AFL player Nathan Broad, of the Richmond Tigers.
