Highlights:
Mexico City is enormous, home to over 22 million people. The best way to get right into the heart of it is with a local, so Jason joined a Soy Wanderlust tour which covered the best Mexican experiences in one full day.
Kicking off in Roma, one of Mexico City's coolest neighbourhoods, Jason's ride for the day was a 1975 VW Combi van, just the wheels to match the adventure! The first stop was El Tizoncito, which has been perfecting the taste of tacos since 1966. It's a fusion of Lebanese shawarma style spit-roast pork and Mexican tortillas, spices and of course chilies! Achiote spice is used for an earthy flavour and red colour, and they add pineapple for sweetness.
Then it was mezcal time! At the mezcaleria, Conejo en la Luna, they have different varieties from all over Mexico. Most are still created using traditional methods passed down through generations where agave is roasted in underground pits infusing the spirit with smokeyness. Jason's samples were paired with various fruits to enhance the flavour profiles.
Suitably warmed up from drinking the mezcal, it was time for the main event, Lucha Libre at Arena Mexico which holds about 16,500 excited wrestling fans. The energy and anticipation for the show was building, but first Jason needed an outfit! Market stalls at the entrance sold costumes in every colour and a myriad of wrestling souvenirs. Donning his new red and green costume mask and cape he headed in for the high-flying acrobatic theatrics of Lucha Libre, which translates as 'free wrestling'. The Luchadores, either heroes or villains, captivate the crowds with their spectacular moves and charisma.
Mexico City might be enormous, but Jason's tour proved you can taste, see and experience a whole lot in one action-packed day. ¡Viva la Lucha Libre!
