Holiday rentals like Airbnb are popular among travellers in the hopes of enjoying a more 'live like a local' experience while potentially saving some money.

But one man has shared his frustration after arriving at his Airbnb only to find a long to-do list to complete before checkout.

"How Airbnb allows you to be charged a large cleaning fee then be required to clean before you check out," the US traveller shared on Reddit, alongside an image of a "few favours" listed by the host of the property.

A traveller has shared the list of a "few favours" left by the host of his Airbnb. Reddit

To "help prepare for the next guests", the list includes things like stripping the bed linens, pillowcases and starting a load of wash for towels.

Bonus points if you dry them as well.

"Clean and load all used dishes into the dishwasher and run," another request reads, plus taking out the trash, turning off all lights, and locking all windows and doors.

In another screenshot, the traveller shared the fees he claims he paid for the property, which included a $95 cleaning fee, a $63 service fee, plus taxes of $61.

That's $US219 ($310) in fees on top of the nightly rate.

Many said the man had no obligation to complete any of the tasks listed. But he disagreed, replying: "This is the drawback of letting [hosts] rate guests. I have to comply to requirements I can not see prior to renting, or I risk taking a hit on my profile and possibly losing the ability to rent in the future."

Plenty of people agreed the list was a little much, especially considering a fee for cleaning had been paid already.

"I'd leave a note that says 'please reference $95 cleaning fee I gave you'," one person commented.

"Geeze the only thing they did not ask you to do was hoover, mop, dry washing, and make the bed. They are taking the p--s tbh," another said.

"This is why I never do Airbnb (among other reasons). Hotels do all this for you and nowadays usually for less than an equivalent rental. Plus hotels have room service and other amenities," was another response.

While a fourth wrote: "This absolutely drives me crazy."

Though a few defended some of the "simple" requests, with one person asking: "You'd leave rubbish in the bins and dirty plates lying around?"
