Travelling with kids puts an entirely different spin on a holiday. But it doesn’t mean you have to spend the whole time hunting down playgrounds (just some of the time).

If sightseeing is on your to-do list, but you’re worried about your little one getting bored, this simple trick can help keep them entertained and invested in where they are at the same time.

Kevin and Kat, a US family living abroad in Spain, regularly share travel tips on their Instagram @cochransabroad. In a recent post, Kat posted advice around things they do to turn sightseeing into fun toddler games.

“We’ve learned that sightseeing with a toddler works a LOT better when we give her something to do instead,” she wrote in the caption.

“It’s such a simple shift, but it means she’s actually part of the adventure instead of just being dragged along for it.”

Enter the rainbow hunt, the flashlight hunt, or, my personal favourite, the museum hunt.

I’ve done museums with my two-year-old before and once she started running it became a lot more about chasing her around exhibits than getting to enjoy the exhibits themselves.

“Before exploring a museum we stop at the gift shop,” Kat wrote.

“We pick 3 postcards showing paintings, sculptures or objects inside. Then she gets to carry them around and find the real thing.

“You could do this for the city too.”

The rainbow hunt is about looking for different coloured doors in a city. Meanwhile, the flashlight hunt is a way for them to spot fun and interesting details during other tours.

You bet I’ll be trying some of these on our next adventure.

People in the comments agreed, calling the advice “genius”.

“Brilliant idea with the postcards,” one person said.

“What a great idea. Kids really do love to have a purpose in their own way,” another comment read.

A third said: “I love these! We always find a playground to end with, but I’ll absolutely be sneaking in some of these games now too.”
