Japan vs Europe? Where Aussies are travelling to in the next few months
It seems Aussie travellers are torn between visiting Japan for cherry blossom season or taking a scenic getaway to some of Europe's most historic cities over the next few months, according to new data.
Airbnb has revealed the top trending destinations for Australians this autumn, and some spots like Bali and Tokyo remain among the favourites.
But based on a growth in searches since autumn 2024 compared to 2025, there are plenty of other destinations landing on our radar.
Here are the top 10.
10. Florence, Italy
Coming in 10th place is Florence, famous for some stunning sights including the Cathedral, and the Baptistery. March to May is considered one of the best times to visit the stunning Italian city.
9. Bali, Indonesia
Bali is usually among the top spots for Aussie travellers, but is in 9th place according to the latest data.
While still one of the favourites, over the next few months Aussies are setting their sights a little further afield.
8. Suzuka, Japan
The 2025 Japanese Grand Prix takes place at the 5.807-kilometre Suzuka Circuit on Sunday, April 6, which means plenty of F1 fans are likely heading to the destination. Visitors can also enjoy stunning outdoor spots for blossoms and the Tsubaki Grand Shrine.
7. Tokyo, Japan
Aussies' love for Japan is still strong well into 2025 with Tokyo landing at number eight on the list. While the city is a must-visit, Japan's Tourism officials urge travellers to venture further than the city limits as well.
6. Athens, Greece
For breathtaking historical sights, Athens is a definite destination on many a traveller's bucket list. And with flight prices to the Greek captial often on sale, it's the ideal place to start a European adventure.
5. Lucerne, Switzerland
Lucerne, in Switzerland is known for its preserved medieval architecture, and its stunning location amid snowcapped mountains on the banks of Lake Lucerne. If you're into 'peak travel' this place is for you. It comes in fifth spot.
4. Kyoto, Japan
If Aussies aren't heading to Tokyo they're likely heading to one of these two Japanese cities instead. Kyoto, once the capital of Japan, comes in at number four.
2. Palermo, Sicily, Italy
With some of Italy's most popular spots like Venice suffering from severe overcrowding, it's no surprise that Aussies are looking to head off the mainland and soak up the sun in Sicily instead.
1. Fukuoka, Japan
The most popular destination for Aussies over the coming months is still in Japan. Fukuoka, sits on the northern shore of Japan's Kyushu Island and is known for ancient temples, beaches and modern shopping malls, including Canal City. Maizuru Park also contains the ruins of 17th-century Fukuoka Castle.
