Shoving ten museli bars in your purse before you board a plane might be a thing of the past if Nik Loukas has anything to say about it.

Author of the blog Inflight Feed, Loukas has made it his business to test the inflight offerings from airlines around the world and rate them.

Speaking to Business Insider about the bad reputation inflight meals get, he said: "In the last five years, airlines are really trying hard to outdo each other with the kind of meals they're offering."

So what airlines should foodies aim for? Austrian Airlines topped Loukas' list, with even their economy offerings surpassing his expectations. Passengers can opt for an upgrade to a "premium" meal for $21 (€15) and expect to receive a breakfast Loukas gave a score of 9.4 (out of a possible 10).

Air Europa was another winner, Loukas said their business class meal was "probably the most amazing business class meal I've received in Europe". That meal scored a 9.2 – Loukas was particularly impressed by the freshness of the salad and bread, as well as the presentation.

It seems European airlines are head and shoulders above the rest; Turkish Airlines also scored a place in the top five. They served up a beef kofta with bulgur, salad and a coffee mousse to their economy passengers.

Scandinavian Airlines was another favourite, though Loukas did mention that business class was the winner and economy passengers may find themselves disappointed. For those willing to spring for it, dining in business class was "like dining in a cool, Scandinavian restaurant," he said.

Rounding out the top five is Singapore Airlines, where the food in all three classes was exceptional, in Loukas opinion. Their business class meals, which allow passengers to pre-select their meal on some routes, scored a 9.6 on Inflight Feed.
