As the borders start to reopen and the weather gets warmer, the prospect of travel is on the cards again, and we can finally look forward to a summer holiday.

Online travel platform Expedia has crunched the numbers to reveal how you can save hundreds by timing your booking just right.

Looking at data released by the Airlines Reporting Corporation (ARC), the website was able to determine the most affordable times to book airfares and accommodation.

Cheapest time to book a holiday

When it comes to booking flights, timing is key. According to the data, prices for domestic flights start to increase about 35-42 days before departure. To get the cheapest deal, it is recommended that you book your flight about three-and-a-half months before. 

When thinking about the exact day of the week to book flights, the data shows that booking domestic flights on a Sunday — not a Friday — can save travellers up to 20 per cent.

As our appetite for travel begins to gain momentum, the findings show that that the general cost of accommodation increases. However, travellers can save money by booking their accommodation on a Wednesday — which is the day when the lowest average daily rate tends to occur.

If you're thinking about what day you should book — Expedia says snagging that hotel on a Wednesday, compared to a Saturday, could save you almost 5 per cent.
