Thailand has been named the 'Destination of the Year' by the prestigious Travel + Leisure magazine.

Already a popular tourist mecca, the country has been chosen for its "rich cultural heritage, dynamic culinary scene, and a seamless blend of tradition with modern innovation".

Jeninne Lee-St. John, the editor in chief of Travel + Leisure Southeast Asia, commented: "Once you understand the place, it's impossible not to fall for it.

"Whether you visit the mountainous north or the southern shores along the Andaman Sea, the country reveals its treasures gradually, and usually by word of mouth.

"There's so much creativity in the art, food, and hospitality scenes that it can be hard to decide where to go and what to do."

She also highlighted the country's high-end hotels, which will receive a boost next year as the next series of The White Lotus is set in Thailand.

It's the 10th year that editors have picked a top destination. Previous countries highlighted have included Costa Rica, Mexico and Italy.

Jacqui Gifford, editor-in-chief of Travel + Leisure, said Thailand is a worthy winner.

"Whether visitors are exploring Bangkok's cutting-edge culinary scene, relaxing on one of the country's 1430 islands, or experiencing its renowned hospitality with some of the best luxury hotels in the world, Thailand offers a unique adventure for every type of traveller."

Chompu Marusachot from the Tourism Authority of Thailand said it's a big honour: "Such recognition from a respected travel publication reinforces Thailand's timeless charm and renowned hospitality that resonates with visitors worldwide."
