For the fifth time running, Singapore's Changi Airport has been named the world's best in the annual Skytrax World Airport Awards.

The accolade is the eighth bestowed upon the airport since the awards were introduced 17 years ago, also taking out the top prize for best airport and leisure activities, and with the on-site Crown Plaza Hotel also being named the world's best airport hotel.

More than 550 airports around the world were ranked using a survey of millions of international passengers covering traveller satisfaction and experience across a number of categories.

Already known for its lush Terminal 3 butterfly garden and with a record 58.7 million passengers passing through its terminals in 2016, Changi's prospects for the next round of awards is already looking good – airport authorities are currently constructing a five-storey leisure centre called "Project Jewel" that is set to feature vertical gardens intended to offset carbon emissions along with an indoor waterfall, and retail and leisure spaces.

"Winning the Skytrax World's Best Airport Award for the fifth consecutive year is immense encouragement to our 50,000-strong airport community at Changi Airport, every one of whom is passionate about delivering the most memorable airport experience to our passengers," Changi Airport CEO Lee Seow Hiang said at the Passenger Terminal Expo in Amsterdam, where the results of this year's poll were announced.

Sadly, no Australian airports managed to crack the global top 10, though the Gold Coast Airport was named best regional airport in the Asia-Pacific, while Brisbane Airport was awarded best airport and best staff service in the Asia-Pacific category.

A number of other categories were also awarded, including world's cleanest and most-improved, and best shopping, dining, staff, and baggage delivery. To see the full results, visit the Airtrax website.
