Lapland, Finland
In the middle of winter, Finnish Lapland has a 24-hour polar night, making it a lot more likely to see the skies light up with the aurora.
Here, you can sleep under the stars in a glass-ceilinged igloo, where you can stay toasty warm while admiring the sky.
While you're there, visit the town of Rovaniemi, where it's Christmas year-round.
You can ride in a sled pulled by reindeer, embark on a snowmobile safari, and even meet Santa himself.
Churchill, Canada
A town on the north-east coast of Canada, Churchill is known for its polar bears in autumn, its whales in summer, and its Northern Lights shows up to 300 nights of the year.
