NZ's immigration site bombarded by Aussies after the federal election

If the results of last week's federal election made you want to pack up your life and jet off to a faraway land where climate change is recognised as a real issue and your future isn't doomed, just know you're not alone.

Following the news Labor lost the "unlosable" election, New Zealand's immigration website – New Zealand Now – experienced four times more website visits than usual from Australians considering a move across the Tasman Sea.

More than 11,500 people logged onto the Immigration New Zealand website on Sunday, compared to fewer than 2500 the previous Sunday, and Google analytics showed a spike in Australians searching the words "moving to New Zealand" reports TVNZ.

In fact, the number who started the visa process through registrations of interest jumped from 20 to 715. However, because Aussies don't need to attain a visa to move to New Zealand, the implication of these figures are not yet clear.

"It is important to note these are purely registrations of interest in coming to New Zealand and does not necessarily translate to the number of people actually moving to New Zealand," said Immigration New Zealand general manager Greg Forsythe in a statement.

Besides conveniently being one of our closest neighbouring countries, moving to New Zealand certainly has its perks. If rolling green pastures, beautiful lakes, and snow-capped mountains weren't enough, it's also governed by perfect angel, Jacinda Arden – a major selling point for Aussies with a bad case of the post-election blues.

Others aren't too keen on the move.

What's New Zealand's take on the whole situation? They're not surprised.

"New Zealand is a wonderful destination full of possibilities. I'm not at all surprised," New Zealand's immigration minister, Iain Lees-Galloway told AAP reporters.

"If Australians are looking at us, that's great."
