The most 'walkable' cities in the world have been revealed - and Sydney is among them
The walkability of a holiday destination is crucial if you're wanting to save some money on things like car hire, taxi fares and public transport tickets.
A new report by Compare the Market AU has analysed walking trails, safety scores, public transport costs and other relevant factors to reveal the best cities to move around easily without a car.
And Sydney has landed above cities like London, Berlin, and New York.
Here are the top 15 most walkable cities.
15. Zurich, Switzerland
In 15th place was Zurich with an overall score of 4.271. The Swiss capital received a relatively high public transport score at 74 per cent and has a high safety rating.
14. Seoul, South Korea
One of the must-visit emerging destinations of 2024 and now 2025, Seoul in South Korea came in 14th with a score of 4.274.
13. Berlin, Germany
Not the only German city to land on the list, the country's capital Berlin came in at number 13. It received a total score of 4.336 in the study.
12. Stockholm, Sweden
Stockholm in Sweden placed at number 12 on 4.423 . Its public transport score came in at 72 per cent and almost 80 per cent of car spaces in the city are free.
11. Sydney, Australia
Sydney only just missed out on a spot in the top 10 with a score of 4.503. Key highlights for Sydney included its 667 walking trails, ranking among the highest globally, its bike infrastructure and relatively affordable public transport price of just over $5.
Melbourne was the only other Australian city in the top 20, ranked 17th globally, performing strongly in public transport and pedestrian-friendly spaces.
10. Amsterdam, Netherlands
While it's best known for bikes, with over 1 million kilometres of bike trails, Amsterdam is also friendly to those without two wheels. It placed in 10th overall with a score of 4.538.
9. Copenhagen, Denmark
The capital of Denmark, Copenhagen came in at number nine with a score of 4.61. It had a very high safety and public transport score of above 75 per cent.
8. Oslo, Norway
In eighth place was Oslo, the captial of Norway, scoring a total of 4.639 thanks to its free parking and pedestrian-friendly spaces.
7. Madrid, Spain
The Spanish capital of Madrid came in seventh with a total score of 4.74. It was one of the best performing for the cost of public transport. And travelling by rail around the country is a great cost-effective way to visit some lesser-known destinations as well.
