The thought of losing your luggage can instil fear in the most seasoned of travellers.

But according to a luggage expert there is something you can do to make sure you aren't caught too off guard if it happens to you.

It all comes down to how you pack, Athan Didaskalou, co-founder of July, reveals to 9Travel.

"Always carry at least a day's worth of clothes, essential toiletries, and medications in your carry-on, along with tech products and chargers," Athan shares.

"Then you'll stress less if the airline loses your luggage (but fingers crossed that doesn't happen)."

Packing for travel can be "tricky", Athan says, especially when space is limited.

"My go-to advice is to wear your bulkiest items, such as heavy boots and a large coat, on the plane to free up room in your luggage," he adds.

Use packing cells to keep your suitcase organised and make repacking easier, Athan also advises. And think about what kind of clothing you're going to wear.

"Natural fibres like merino wool are excellent for layering and resisting odours," he says.

Here are some more of Athan's top packing tips:

  • If you think you'll need extra space for shopping, opt for an expandable suitcase so you can get more room when you need it.
  • Transfer toiletries into small containers to save space and comply with airline regulations.
  • Always check the weather forecast for your destination to pack appropriately and avoid bringing unnecessary items.
  • Choose versatile footwear and include a cap for both sun protection and warmth.
  • Bring a laundry bag to separate dirty clothes; calico or cotton bags from new sheet sets work well if your suitcase doesn't have one. (Hot tip - July cases do.)
