Aussie airline dominates 'longest flights' in the world - with even longer journeys on the way

As Qantas edges ever closer to launching new ultra-long haul flights of 20+ hours as part of Project Sunrise, the Aussie airline is already dominating the list of the ultra-long haul flights in the world.

As of 2025, the ranking of the world's top 10 longest flights includes destinations in Europe, Asia, North America, and the Middle East.

According to the Official Aviation Guide's (OAG) airline schedules data, right now Singapore Airlines still holds the title of having the world's longest flight thanks to its Singapore to New York route.

The flight from New York to Singapore, which was first launched in October 2018, covers 15,332 kilometres with a flight time of 18 hours and 40 minutes.

The trip from Singapore to New York is slightly quicker at 18 hours and 7 minutes.

Qantas has been flying internationally for 90 years

Qatar Airways' flight between Doha and Auckland, New Zealand, is the second longest covering 14,526 kilometres.

First launched in February 2017, the flight time on average is over 17 and a half hours, and notably crosses 10 time zones during the journey.

Qantas, however, is hot on their heels with the next three of the top five longest flights in the world.

The Aussie airline's Perth to London route is the third longest in the world. Covering 14,499 kilometres the trip clocks in at just over 17 hours.

In fourth is the Qantas flight from Dallas Fort Worth to Melbourne, which travels 14,468 kilometres taking around 17 hours 35 minutes.

The airline also flies from Paris to Perth, which is the fifth longest flight covering 14,265 kilometres in just over 16 hours.

Qantas also flies from Perth to Rome, recently announcing it was from Perth to Rome on this route in 2026 due to strong demand and "high customer satisfaction".

Project Sunrise flights will reshuffle rankings once they take off, with flights from Sydney to New York and London direct looking at a flight time of over 20 hours.

The rankings look at commercial flights by Great Circle Distance (GCD) in kilometres, not flight time.

GCD is a way of measuring a flight's length, taking into account the fact that the Earth is spherical, and therefore the shortest route for a flight to take is not a straight line drawn from point to point on a 2D map, OAG explained.
