Universal's highly-anticipated new $435m Harry Potter rollercoaster opens

We first got a taste of the Potter magic in May, when Universal dropped a star-studded preview of the highly-anticipated $435 million (US$300 million) ride.

Now the wait is finally over, with the opening of 'Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure' on Thursday at Universal Orlando, the star attraction of the park's popular 'The Wizarding World of Harry Potter' extension.

The ride is already getting top praise from fans, however, opening day wasn't without its hitches, with bad weather and lightning bringing about the ride's temporary closure.

Hardcore fans were left waiting up to 10 hours for a spin on Hagrid's hog, according to news outlets.

Many Potterheads were spotted camping out to secure an early spot in the queue, while other park attendees spent all day in the line.

Some Harry Potter stars arrived a day early to roadtest the attraction for themselves, including Rupert Grint (Ron Weasley), Tom Felton (Draco Malfoy) and Evanna Lynch (Luna Lovegood).

The themed rollercoaster revolves around series favourite Hagrid, a half-giant and friend to Harry.

Visitors can hop on Hagrid's motorcycle or sidecar and 'fly' around the Forbidden Forest at thrilling speeds of up to 80km/h.

Despite the lengthy queues for the coaster, the feedback from fans has been positive regarding the park's heart-pumping new addition.

Visitors are advised to download the virtual line app to reduce time spent in queue, though parkgoers will only be able to book the ride from June 14 (GMT-4).
