The 2,400-year-old tree you can drive right through the middle

Deep within the Yosemite National Park in California, a stunning giant sequoia is having its social media moment.

The 2,400-year-old drive-thru tree found at Tuolumne Grove, nestled deep within the park, is the selfie must-have for visitors in the area.

There's even forums online asking where to find the tourist favourite within the 31,000 square kilometre national park.

The tree was hallowed out in 1875 after it was struck by lightning, hoping to drum-up tourism. And well, it worked.

The tree is one of hundreds of redwoods and giant sequoias in the park, with many growing as high as 90 metres.

However, it isn’t the only tree of its kind in California, with the Chandelier tree in Leggett, about 180 miles north of San Francisco Bay Area, also a favourite.

It is found inside a privately-owned grove and was carved in 1937.
