New Zealand is one of those countries that you can keep visiting over and over again, and you’ll never get tired of it.

From the buzzy cities to the ski fields, from the pristine beaches to the remote hikes in the Southern Alps, it offers something for everyone. Here is the best time to visit New Zealand, depending on what you want to do.

What is the best month to visit New Zealand?

New Zealand has so many varied activities on offer that there’s no real ‘best’ time to visit. In fact, the weather is perfect year-round, it just depends on what you want to do.

Keen to road trip around the beaches up north? Summer is your best bet.

Winter is obviously the best time to ski, while the shoulder seasons of spring and autumn are great for camping, hiking, and city breaks.

What is the cheapest time to visit New Zealand?

After a bargain? Try to travel outside the peak seasons, which are summer and spring.

Heading across the ditch for the shoulder or low seasons from May to September means you’ll have cooler weather, but there will also be way fewer crowds, and you’ll be greeted with cheaper accommodation and car rental costs.

Don’t expect to be hit with gloomy weather, though. New Zealand winters may be cold, but you’re likely to get some brilliantly sunny days.

Avoid places like Fiordland and the West Coast if you don’t want rain – instead head to Nelson, Marlborough, Hawke’s Bay, and the Bay of Plenty, which tend to top the charts of NZ’s sunniest places.

The exception to off-season travel is, of course, if you’re skiing.

What months can you ski in New Zealand?

The absolute best time to visit New Zealand for skiing is mid-to-late August.

For the rest of winter, this is the breakdown:

  • Late June: Early season, so ski fields rely heavily on man-made snow, but prices are much cheaper.
  • July: Peak season for crowds thanks to school holidays, but the snow base is solid.
  • August: The standout month for serious skiers and heli-skiing. This is when you’ll get the deepest bases and best powder.
  • September: Slopes become quieter, but the snow can get slushy as temperatures rise.

What is the best month for cruising in New Zealand?

The cruise season in New Zealand officially runs from October to April. In the cooler months, when the days are shorter and the temperature drops, there are typically no cruises on offer.

For the best weather, ideally you want to cruise sometime during December through February. You’ll get sunny days and late sunsets, along with warm weather – but prices are typically higher.

To avoid crowds, aim to cruise in February and March, after the school holidays but before it starts to get chilly.

Weather in April, October, and November is unpredictable – you could have brilliant blue skies or it could be bucketing rain. As a result, cruising during these months tends to be the cheapest.

The best time to hike in New Zealand is March. It’s early autumn, so the weather is mild and comfortable when you’re walking all day, with minimal rainfall.

There’s also a significant drop in peak-season crowds, and the added bonus of golden foliage in the South Island.

Many overnight hikes in New Zealand have huts along the way where you can sleep, making things slightly more comfortable and warm on your adventure.

Just remember to book ahead.
