Style moment: See Princess Diana's most-iconic looks at Kensington Palace

A handful of the late Princess Diana's most-iconic dresses have gone on display to the public as part of an exhibition at Kensington Palace, which opens to the public today.

The Diana: Her Fashion Story exhibition is part of a series of events that will mark the 20th anniversary of the princess' tragic death. She was killed in a car crash in Paris on August 31, 1997.

Beginning with the debutant gown she donned in 1979, 25 of her outfits are spread across six displays, each explaining their significance and charting her journey to becoming a bona fide fashion icon.

"Diana, Princess of Wales, was one of the most-photographed women in the world, and every fashion choice she made was closely scrutinised," curator Eleri Lynn said in a media release in November.

"Our exhibition explores the story of a young woman who had to quickly learn the rules of royal and diplomatic dressing."

Also on show are the midnight-blue velvet gown she was snapped in while dancing with John Travolta at a White House gala, and the pale pink Emanuel blouse she wore for her official engagement portraits.

The dresses have been borrowed from both public and private collections from around the world.

The Kensington Palace exhibition is open daily between 10am and 6pm until October 31, 2017. Tickets cost $30 (£19) for adults, and can be purchased at the gate or online.
