Inside the extravagant music hall that cost $843 million

It's not unusual for a building to go over budget, but perhaps almost $760million over an $85million budget is a little on the excessive side.

But the newly-opened Elbphilharmonie, a concert hall in Hamburg, is on the excessive side. Just take a look inside the 2,100 seated stunner.

There are 10,000 unique acoustic panels, made up of one million cells which shape the sound by either absorbing the waves or causing them to reverberate through the halls. The design ensures that perfectly balanced audio can be heard from every corner.

Then there's the exterior. The roof is designed to mimic the shape of waves and is covered in giant sequins, with 1000 plate-glass panels which change colour in the light.

It was designed by Swiss architects Jacques Herzog and Pierre DeMeuron, who is known for designing Tate Modern in London and the Olympic 'Bird Nest' Stadium in Beijing.

Added to the power duo was Japanese acoustician Yasuhisa Toytoa, best known for being the man behind the Walt Disney Concert Hall in LA.
