Locals share the touristy spots in their city they 'unironically love'

Tourist hotspots can be a hit-or-miss in every city, but have you ever wondered which ones are beloved by travellers and locals alike?

Residents from some of the world's biggest destinations have taken to Reddit to share which tourist locations in their city they "unironically love" - despite their popularity - and why.

Amongst the bustle, London boasts some gorgeous sights a rich cultural scene.

"Londoner here: I'll always love Trafalgar Square, Kew Gardens, Greenwich, the National Portrait Gallery, the Victoria and Albert Museum and Chinatown," one local commented.

Another added that Central London, the Thames, The Malls, and Whitehall were their favourite sights.

Two users mentioned Borough Market - a food marketplace popular with tourists and locals alike located in Southwark.

"It's overwhelmed with tourists but still exceptionally good produce available so I go at least once a week," said one user.

"We speed run the stalls to get what we need (bread, cheese, a few other bits), have a drink outside the Market Porter and people watch and grab a late table at Padella," said another local.

Several US locals explained why they unironically loved their city, with multiple mentions for New York.

Commenters mentioned the NYC High Line - a public elevated park and walkway through Manhattan's West Side.

"I love Central Park," another local commented. "I used to take my dog and we used to go there from Bushwick and walk around the park from top to bottom for two hours."

The area around Time Square also received a shoutout.

As for elsewhere in the country, San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, and Chinatown were all spots that locals unironically love.

"I drive over the Golden Gate Bridge all the time, and have been for nearly 30 years. I still love it, every time.," said one Reddit user.

A local from Washington DC mentioned the Smithsonian Museums, which include 21 different museums, 14 education centres and research centres, and the National Zoo.

"I love popping in to see a favourite exhibit for free," they said.

"With my kid, we'll spend a day seeing the transportation exhibit at American History, dinosaurs and mammals at Natural History, the sculpture garden and fountains at National Gallery, and the kids play area at American Indian.

"Other days we'll drive to Udvar Hazy to see the space shuttle and World War I planes or to the National Zoo to visit all the animals there."

Several German locals mentioned their favourite spots in Berlin and outside of it.

"Seeing the Gedächtniskirche (Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church) always gives me this feeling of huge historical significance," said one commenter of the symbolic church situated at the centre of West Berlin.

"Also walking from Brandenburger Gate to the Museumsinsel (Museum Island) or just walking around Museumsinsel in general is pretty fantastic."

Another local from Heidelberg, a quaint city south of Frankfurt, said they love the famous 13th century Heidelberg Castle, whose impressive ruins draw around a million visitors every year.

"I always pause to look at the Heidelberg Castle on the bus that takes me to work," they said.
