'It's one of those places you dream about but nothing prepares you for being here'

- Brought to you by Scenic.

Africa had always called to me. The colours, the wildlife, the stories – it's one of those places you dream about, and think, one day… Well, that day finally came.

I'd seen the documentaries, but nothing prepares you for standing on the open plains, watching elephants meander past as the sun melts into the horizon.

It's the kind of magic you can't quite explain… you have to feel it.

Small groups, big connections

One of the reasons I loved the experience so much was the small group size. With just a handful of guests, it never felt like a tour – more like a group of friends on an incredible African exploration.

Every detail was taken care of from the moment we touched down. Think the kind of personalised service that makes you feel like royalty, even in the middle of the bush.

Thanks to the included Scenic Freechoice program, I could shape the itinerary to suit what I wanted to experience.

Always wanted to sample the wines of South Africa's legendary Cape Winelands? Done. Keen for the thrill of a Harley Davidson ride along the coast to Cape Point? Absolutely.

Or maybe you want to get soaked at the edge of Victoria Falls – another bucket-list moment, and yes, also an option. How you explore is completely up to you.

Elevated moments with Scenic Enrich

Then there were the Scenic Enrich experiences – special moments built into the journey that elevate it to something truly unforgettable.

One evening we dined under the stars, surrounded by the sounds of the African bush.

Another day, we boarded a short scenic flight that showed off just how vast and untouched this continent really is.

Unforgettable wildlife encounters

But if I had to choose a standout highlight – it would be the safaris.

The thrill of spotting a pride of lions dozing in the shade, or locking eyes with a leopard just metres from the vehicle – it's primal, exhilarating, and incredibly humbling.

I was lucky enough to tick off the Big Five, and the experience of being immersed in that wild, natural world is unforgettable… it still gives me shivers.

Staying somewhere truly special

Another aspect I really enjoyed as part of the journey were the Scenic Special Stays. These aren't just hotels – they're destinations in themselves.

One morning I woke up in a luxury safari lodge in Kruger National Park, with giraffes passing by at breakfast.

Another night, I was soaking in the colonial charm and ocean views of the Oyster Box Hotel in Durban.

The romance of the Blue Train

And for something totally unique, I even had the chance to board the iconic Blue Train.

The overnight colonial rail journey through South Africa is complete with butler service, gourmet meals, and ever-changing scenery from my cabin window.

A journey that stays with you

By the end, I felt like I'd only scratched the surface of what this continent has to offer - and with Scenic's journeys into Kenya, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe, there's a whole other layer of Africa to explore if you're ready for more.

For me, travelling through Africa was a life experience. I came away feeling so connected to the people, the wildlife, and the continent itself.

And let's be honest - once you've seen a lion yawn from three metres away, regular holidays just don't quite feel the same.
