Tuesday Travel Tip: World leading concierge on what to blag from your hotel

Frank Laino has 20-plus years in concierge, working now as the Executive Concierge at London’s storied Stafford HoteStafford Hote. 

He’s even clocked up some serious titles during his career, including winning “Top Concierge Worldwide” and "World’s Best Concierge”. Pretty impressive.

So, 9Honey Travel decided to hit him up for some advice on the tricks that many guests generally don’t even think about. And it was all surprisingly simple stuff…

1. Never bring children’s toys

Most parents pack their suitcase with toys to keep their kids busy, but we all know that suitcase space in prime realty when it comes to travelling. Frank says to always check with the hotel’s concierge before arriving. “We have lots of games at the hotel here and even board games for adults. People just need to ask,” he tells. 

2. Leave the hair styling products at home 

Hair tongs, straighteners and hairspray are often forgotten when packing, but Frank says that these can all be called on from the front desk. “We even have a female concierge on the team who can assist if the boys don't understand what is needed,” he says. The one thing to also remember is that almost every hotel has a supply of nail varnish remover.

3. Don’t book anything until you’ve talked to the concierge

Franks says that if he books for clients, rather than them booking themselves, they will always be treated like royalty. 

“It might not be cheaper but booking through the concierge is definitely value for money,” he admits. “We know the best local restaurants, and have car rental companies who will deliver and collect free of charge, saving time and taxi fares to go to their offices. We provide fast track entry tickets to most of the main attractions at the same price as the venue.”

4. Fancy a workout? No sweat

“I always think I have been asked every conceivable question there is over the years, but there is always something new,” laughs Frank. He says the biggest trend right now is health and fitness additions to the room, including Nike sneakers, TRX cross training equipment and even trampolines.

5. All about the attitude

Franks says the key to success in getting a room upgrade is to treat the hotel staff well. “There is no harm in being nice, you will find that always helps,” he admits. 

But he says the biggest conundrum he sees from hotel first-timers is to tip or not to tip, and this can sometimes put them off talking to him and his staff. 

“They feel they are under an obligation to tip the concierge or they are embarrassed about not knowing something,” he explains. 

So, what’s the weirdest request he’s had? “A middle eastern client once asked me to propose marriage to his niece,” he laughs. “It was a serious request, but unfortunately I had to decline as my wife was not amused.”
