Boeing unveils plans for jet that can fly from Australia to Europe in five hours

The only downside to travelling is the lengthy flight times, but that could all change with Boeing's new addition.

The airline giant has unveiled plans for a hypersonic jet that can fly from Australia to Europe in less than five hours, and New York to London in just under two.

Renderings showing the preliminary design of the sleek passenger-carrying airliner have been revealed at the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics convention held in Atlanta.

Unlike typical passenger jets, the design is streamlined and features a pointier nose.

According to Aviation Week Network, Boeing has joined with hypersonic specialists to see if it's possible for a passenger transport to cross the Atlantic Ocean in two hours, or the Pacific Ocean in three hours.

Flying at Mach 5 (6174 km/h), the airline has projected a cruising altitude of 30 kilometres. That's nine kilometres higher than the Concorde, the jet that once held the world's fastest title. 

The incredibly fast speed of Boeing's new vessel could also enable same-day return flights across the pacific.

But before you get excited, the jet is still around 20-30 years away from being possible, according to a Boeing spokesperson.
