The Australian passport is now more powerful than ever

Australians all let us rejoice, because our passport has never been more powerful than it is right now.

The Henley Passport Index, a system that compares each nation for its ease of travelling overseas has revealed that Australia ranked sixth in the world when it comes to travelling without visas.

This is one spot higher than last year, with Aussies now having visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 183 destinations around the world.

Sitting just behind Australia on the list is New Zealand passport holders, who can visit 182 destinations.

However it's the Japanese who hold the honour of having the world's most powerful passport, with the ability to travel to a record 189 out of 218 countries without a visa.

Germany follows in second position with 188, and third is Finland, France, Italy, South Korea, Spain, and Sweden who are able to visit 187 countries.

If you did want to visit every single country in the world, you would have to have 14 passports to grant you access.

Despite our privileges, there is also a downside to the Aussie passport worth mentioning.

According to New Daily it happens to be the most expensive passports in the world, with the cost of a 10-year renewal climbing from $277 to $282 this year.

But if that's the cost of seeing the world, so be it.
