Camping and caravanning are having a major comeback. Last year, more than 17 million Aussies embarked on this style of holiday, a massive increase on the year before.

And with a country that looks like ours, why wouldn’t you?

As we head into the chillier months, Aussies are seeking out the sun and choosing to venture (or stay) north for their holidays.

But where to go? Well, why not ask the locals?

According to tens of thousands of Queenslanders, the best camping spot in the whole state is Gordon Country, Goomburra.

Over 75,000 unique votes were tallied to round up the best of the best that Queensland has to offer, as part of a celebration for QLD Day on June 6th.

Gordon Country in the Goomburra Valley is a pet-friendly private campground, set on a massive 4,000-acre block.

This is where you can tap into a true Australian country experience, with activities like four-wheel driving, hiking, and bird watching. The ecotourism property offers tent sites, glamping, cabins, and caravan stays.

Thanks to its huge area, the campsites are massive and spread out, so you get your own slice of the QLD bush without having to contend with noisy neighbours. Though you might see some of their free-range cattle and donkeys grazing throughout the campgrounds.

About two hours from Brisbane, it’s a beloved weekend escape for city-dwellers who want to get off-grid.

Hold it Flats in Yalboroo made it into second place in the ranking of best camping and 4WD spots. Located in the Mackay region, just inland from the Whitsunday coast, the huge 120-acre property offers shady campsites by the river, surrounded by bushland.

All campsites can be provided with their own fire pit, which is a perfect way to stay warm on winter nights – though it really doesn’t get that cold in this area.

Previously named one of the best tent campsites in Australia, this spot offers a more laid-back Queensland holiday for those who want to head north.

Mackay has also been named one of the top places to go this winter to avoid crowds and get the most for your money.

Skyscanner identified the region as “gaining traction as a savvy alternative for travellers seeking authenticity, value and space to explore”.

Double Island Point in Cooloola rounded out the top three.

On the borders of a gorgeous national park, here you’ll find golden sandy beaches, calm lagoons, lush rainforest, and walking trails that’ll make you never want to leave.

You’ll need to secure a permit from QLD Parks, and then you can park your 4WD right on the beach and set up for an epic night under the stars.

There are also grassy beachfront sites for regular tent camping, and riverfront sites, too.

Meanwhile, if you’re more of a ‘hotel’ person than a camper, you might be interested in the opening of the brand-new Avani hotel in Mooloolaba on the Sunshine Coast.

Sitting just 100 metres from the beach esplanade, it offers a rooftop pool with sweeping ocean views, and a chance to enjoy the Queensland winter sun in comfort.
