Getting out of the city for a day is always a nice idea, but with fuel costs rising, the thought of a two-hour road trip doesn't exactly appeal right now.

Instead of just sitting at home, though, there are still some great options for an easy getaway.

If you're lucky enough to live in a major city, you can make public transport your new best friend. Though there is one big thing to consider.

There has been a recent flurry of lists featuring day trips that are accessible by train from the city.

But what many of these lists don't account for is the need for a car when you get to your destination.

Yes, the Blue Mountains are a wonderful day trip from Sydney with plenty of train stations - but the Three Sisters and many of the other recommended activities are at least an hours' walk from the station.

Similarly, the Central Coast is a beloved spot for Sydneysiders looking for an escape.

It's an easy 1.5-hour train to Gosford... but that might not be where you want to spend your day. The bus to Terrigal can take up to an hour, and suddenly, half your day is spent on public transport.
