Amazing drone footage showcases Peru's 'Rainbow Mountain'

Hannah Blackiston

A touring company has taken a drone along on a trek through the Andes – and the results are nothing short of incredible.

The footage, captured by Flashpacker Connect, showcases the beautiful geographical features of Vinicunca Mountain, a name which translates to "seven-coloured mountain". Due to a variety of colourful sediments in the area, Vinicunca Mountain has stripes of maroon, mustard yellow, and soft blue along running from top to bottom.

The mountain was previously covered by layers of thick ice, but as the region has warmed up, the colours of the mountain have been put on full display, making it a bucket-list item for travellers.

The mountain can only be reached by horse or foot and it takes about three hours from the nearest road. Guided tours were first offered in January 2016, and there are now many agencies that run treks to Vinicunca.

Tours will take you up to the mountain, but it's not possible to climb it due to conservation efforts. Some travellers handle the altitude better than others; it's recommended you spend time in the area to become accustomed to the environment if you have any worries.
