Ibiza is running out of water after tourism boom

Its popularity has lagged in recent years but 2016 is proving the year that Ibiza takes back its crown as the party capital of Europe.

But there's one issue. The small Balearic Island is struggling with the rise in tourism and is, in fact, running out of water.

Vicente Torres, head of the island's tourism department, claims that there's limited resources and they can't "support much more" increase in visitors.

In a recent interview, he said: "More people on the islands means more people consuming our resources, water, environment.

"Nowadays we have nearly 100,000 legal touristic beds and a registered population of 13,000 inhabitants, approximately. The island is just 572 square kilometres; we cannot support much more increase in tourism."

Partying is thirsty work

It's claimed that Europeans are heading to the small island for a break as they feel it is safe, in comparison to France, Turkey or Egypt.

But the island's poor infrastructure is struggling with the increase of visitors and a tourism tax was introduced earlier this month to control the influx.

Rates depend on the hotel's star rating but could see visitors paying $3 extra a day, which will go towards protecting the islands' natural resources.
