Era over as major player pulls out of F1

Renault has confirmed it will stop producing F1 engines for Alpine following the 2025 season, concluding almost half a century in the class.

<p>Damon Hill has returned to the scene of the infamous crash that handed Michael Schumacher the 1994 world championship.</p><p>In the final race of a tragic season that claimed the lives of both Ayrton Senna and Roland Ratzenberger, Schumacher arrived in Adelaide needing only to finish ahead of Hill to clinch the championship.</p><p>But that looked in serious doubt when he slid off the road while leading and smacked the wall at turn five. </p><p>Schumacher came back onto the track but was slow, and Hill – sensing this could be his only opportunity – dived up the inside.</p><p>Schumacher turned in Hill and the pair made contact. Schumacher was launched into the air and into a tyre wall. He was out on the spot.</p><p>Hill trundled slowly around the track back to the pits, but a broken suspension meant he was unable to continue. </p><p>Schumacher was champion for the first time.</p><p>"It would not be an exaggeration to say there was worldwide outrage and controversy," Hill said in an Instagram post.</p><p>"It was perhaps a predictable denouement to a fractious and tragic season. </p><p>"Most of us at Williams were glad to see the back of it."</p> — 24
