World chess champ retains title

Norwegian Magnus Carlsen has retained his crown as World Chess champion after defeating Russian challenger Sergey Karjakin in New York.

On his 26th birthday, Carlsen won 3-1 in Wednesday's tiebreakers, after the pair's 12-game match had ended in a 6-6 draw on Monday.

The match, which began in Manhattan on November 11, had been tense throughout.

Karjakin won game 8, leading to Carlsen's first loss of the match after 7 consecutive draws. In game 10 Carlsen tied the match with a win of his own.

Carlsen - a chess prodigy who became a Grandmaster at the age of 13 - first won the World Championship in 2013, defeating Viswanathan Anand from India. He has held the title ever since.
