UFC: McGregor stuns Aldo with instant knockout

Irish fighter Conor McGregor is the new UFC featherweight champion after stunning defending title holder Jose Aldo in a record 13-second knockout.

Aldo, dubbed the "'best pound-for-pound fighter on the planet", went into the match at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas having not been beaten in a decade.

But the 27-year-old McGregor needed just 13 seconds of the five-round title fight to change that statistic.

Opening with just a few feigned swings, McGregor ended the match with a brutal left-hand punch that connected with the onrushing Aldo.

The Irishman then jumped on the floored Brazilian and landed more vicious blows before the referee intervened and stopped the fight.

"I feel for Jose," McGregor said after the fight. "He's a phenomenal champion. He deserved to go a little bit longer.

"I still feel, at the end of the day, precision beats power, timing beats speed. All day it would have happened."

The fight eclipsed Ronda Rousey's 14-second defeat of Cat Zingano at UFC 184 earlier this year and left the mixed martial art's world in disbelief.

However, fight fans may not have to wait for round two with Aldo already demanding a rematch between the two foes.

"He threw a cross at my chest I wasn't expecting," Aldo told ESPN.

"I think we need a rematch. It wasn't really a fight."
