Andy Murray goes down swinging in five-set loss to Roberto Bautista Agut

Andy Murray hunched, hobbled and grimaced his way through a five-set epic, but he couldn't fight his way out of the first round of the Australian Open.

In what is likely his final appearance at the grand slam after a stunning retirement announcement last week, 'Sir Andy' went down swinging against Roberto Bautista Agut at Melbourne Arena.

The Spaniard defeated the Scot 6-4 6-4 6-7 6-7 6-2, in a see-sawing, emotional affair in front of an adoring crowd clearly cheering for the former world No.1.

At one point in the fifth set, needing to hold serve to stay in the match, the fans cheered so loudly that Murray saluted them in appreciation.

Even Bautista Agut was in awe of the man he had beaten, giving him a shoutout after the win.

"Andy deserved this atmosphere, he deserved all these people to watch him. It was an unbelievable match, a really good fight," the Spaniard said.

"I want to congratulate him for all he did for tennis."

Murray was thankful to his supporters, coaches and family in an interview on the court following the loss, but teased that he may try to return if his body will allow it.

"Maybe I'll see you again. I'll do everything possible to try. If I want to go again, I'll need to have a big operation. I'll give it my best shot," Murray said.

"I've honestly loved playing here over the years,this is an amazing place to play tennis.

"I literally gave everything I had, it wasn't enough tonight, so congratulations to Roberto and his team. "
