Nick Kyrgios' 'disaster' warning for Aussie tennis summer as big three remain in doubt for Open

Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios says it would be an "absolute disaster" if tennis' big three of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic all miss the summer of tennis.

As it stands, Federer has already ruled himself out of the Australian Open as he continues his recovery from knee surgery, while Nadal, who last week tested positive for COVID-19, has stated he \.

With Nadal in doubt, that same scenario also applies to Djokovic.

Djokovic's availability has been clouded for several months due to his stance on the COVID-19 vaccination, which he's stated is a vaccination status is a \ for him. A Victorian state-enforced COVD-19 vaccine mandate has put pressure on the 20-time grand slam winner's availability, who will need to be vaccinated or meet the criteria for a medical exemption.

Kyrgios says it is crucial that the sport has the iconic big three all participating this summer in Australia.

"I honestly don't know Novak's current situation with anything COVID related or what he needs to play," Kyrgios told the Herald and The Age.

"I hope he's had a good Christmas and I hope he's able to play in the sport for as long as possible, because I've voiced before I think Federer, Nadal and Djokovic need to be [playing].

"If all three aren't there, it's a disaster. It's an absolute disaster for the fans and the people that enjoy tennis.

"Yes, it's obviously a good opportunity for some of the younger guys to come through and make an impact but, as a whole, we do need them to be part of the sport."

It was confirmed last night that 2020 US Open champion Dominic Thiem had pulled out of the Australian Open due to a lack of preparation.

Meanwhile, Kyrgios will headline the Sydney Tennis Classic next month after it was revealed he had been handed a wildcard entry.

The tournament will be the perfect opportunity for Kyrgios to get time on the court before the Australian Open, which gets underway on January 17.

"I've been training at home in Canberra and here in Sydney and I feel good after an extended break from the game," he said.

"I'm looking forward to the final hit-out before the AO, thanks to Tennis Australia for the opportunity to play."

Fellow Australian stars Ash Barty and Alex de Minaur will also compete at the Sydney Tennis Classic, which will be held from January 9-15.
