Kyrgios withdraws from Rome tournament

Nick Kyrgios has withdrawn from the Italian Open with a hip injury, raising questions about his participation at the French Open in a fortnight's time.

Australia's No.1 was scheduled to play Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut in a first round match on Tuesday but lucky loser Alexandr Dolgopolov was named to take his place.

Kyrgios won two matches at the Madrid Open last week, before being soundly beaten by eventual champion Rafael Nadal.

He received treatment on what appeared to be a hip complaint during his opening round win over Marcos Baghdatis.

"I can serve but I can't move that well," he told an ATP Tour physio during that match.

It had been a tough few weeks for Kyrgios, who skipped the Estoril Open in Portugal to return to Australia and attend the funeral of his grandfather.

With only a few minor tournaments next week, Kyrgios may struggle to get decent game time even if fit for Roland Garros.

The Madrid Open has been his only appearance on the red dirt this season.

Ranked No.18 in the world the Canberran had been eyeing off some more rankings points to lift him into the top 16 before the second slam of the year.

A seeding there would ensure he meets no player ranked higher than him until at tleast the fourth round.

He was already given a slight boost with Roger Federer announcing he won't play the French Open.
